179D, known as the Energy-Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction is now a permanent part of the tax code thanks to Congress and the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.
How to Qualify
For a building to qualify, the energy based improvements must be made to the HVAC or interior lighting systems or to the building’s envelope. The enhancements to these systems must surpass ASHRAE 62-2001 standards for buildings placed into service before 2016—and ASHRAE 62-1-2007 standards thereafter.
There are many ways to qualify for 179D as there are different levels of deductions depending on the energy efficiency level that your project meets. Energy consumption cost reductions of as little as 10%, in some cases, can result in very substantial tax savings. To maximize the tax savings benefit it is important that business owners examine and exhaust all of the partial and fractional qualification methods to get the most out of 179D tax deductions.
Office buildings use significant energy in order to maintain comfortable and productive working environments. Energy-efficient systems and equipment can help landlords and tenants reduce energy costs, enhance comfort, and improve safety.
